Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Economics and Political Science - Department of Political Science Summary: The representation of women in parliaments witnesses a dramatic variation between countries of the world. This inadequate representation of women has led to serious challenges to women. Accordingly, this thesis aims at establishing a relationship between the institutional design, represented in the laws and constitutions, and the representation of women in the political life, especially in the parliament.By visiting three countries; Egypt, as a country with a remarkably low women representation in the parliament. Tunisia, as a country that shares the same political system with Egypt and has a remarkably high women representation in the parliament. Sweden, as the highest representation in Europe, which brings a best practice model to the research. Leading towards the identification of key policy recommendations for the Egyptian policy makers to enhance the women representation in the Egyptian parliament.The research provides a comprehensive understanding of the different patterns of women representation in the world, and the causes behind them.The research employs the joint method of agreement and difference to the three cases, to provide an exhaustive identification of the possible reasons behind the variation of women representation in the political sphere
