Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Veterinary Medicine - Department of Micrbiology Summary: The emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a major concern in both human and veterinary medicine. In Egypt, Accurate numbers describing the prevalence of MRSA and VRSA are lacking especially in veterinary medicine. From this point of view, the aim of the study is to determine the occurrence of MRSA, VRSA isolated from different sources by both phenotypic and genotypic methods) and also to develop a rapid, accurate and sensitive technique for identification of resistant S.aureus. So, a total of 384 samples were collected from different sources as follow: 150 raw milk, 100 camel meat, 40 human nasal and wound swabs and 94 ration samples. 136(35.4%) isolates out of 384 were confirmed to be S.aureus by biochemical tests. They were tested against 9 antibiotic discs. There are three phenotypic methods for detection of MRSA: oxacillin disc (1æg),cefoxitin disc (30æg) and chromoginic agar(ORSAB).The most reliable method for detection of MRSA cefoxitin disc diffusion as identified in the present study and recorded by(CLSI,2016). So, the recovery rate of MRSA from different sources according to cefoxitin disc was 77 isolates distributed as follow: (44.6%)from milk,(86.4%) from camel,(70.9%)from human and (40.7%)from ration with the highest recovery rate recorded in Camel (86.4%). vancomycin disk does not differentiate vancomycin-susceptible, intermediate, and resistant isolates
