Study objective: This study was conducted in a trail to assess the effect of plant extracts such as okra, guava leaves and green tea to ameliorate diabetes mellitus and its complications in the diabetic experimental rats. 42 Wistar albino rats were used. A group of 6 rats were separated to serve as control negative group, While, diabetes was induced in the rest of rats by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (STZ) (50 mg/kg.b.wt), then they were divided into 6 groups; control positive (diabetic) group, diabetic groups that received a daily oral administration of either metformin (100mg/Kg.b.wt) or water extract of okra (450mg/Kg.bwt) or water extract of guava leaves (G.L.aq) (750mg/Kg.b.wt) or ethanolic extract of guava leaves (G.L.eth) (450mg/Kg.b.wt) or water extract of green tea (GT) (1g/Kg.b.wt).The treatment lasted for 4 weeks. Results: The control positive (diabetic) group showed a highly significant rise in blood glucose level, elevated activities of liver enzymes (AST & ALT) and a significant increase in urea & creatinine levels, disturbed lipid profile along with decline in blood GLP-1 level and hepatic antioxidant enzymes (SOD, GPx and CAT) activities as compared to control negative group . On the other hand, the treated groups reversed these aforementioned changes, showing significant reduction in the blood glucose, urea & creatinine levels and decreased AST &ALT activities, in addition to elevated blood GLP-1 level and liver antioxidant enzymes activities with improvement in lipid profile to some extent
