Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine - Department of Orthodontics Summary: Introduction: The objectives of this cross sectional study were to assess the pubertal growth spurt in a group of Marsa Matrouh school female adolescents, using the developmental stages of the middle phalanx of the middle finger (MP3) as a skeletal maturation index and its correlation with adductor sesamoid ossification stages. Methods: The study included 742 adolescent females (ages ranged from 8 to 14 years). The sample was divided into 2 groups: MP3 group (group A) and adductor sesamoid group (group B). Each group was subdivided into 6 sub-groups according to their age. Middle phalanx of the middle finger (MP3) of each subject was radiographed and the developmental stages were evaluated by the method of Rajogobal and Kansal. In 141 subjects from the total sample, the adductor sesamoid (AS) was digitally radiographed and its skeletal maturation was determined according to the method described by Chapman. Results: There was a significant difference between mean ages of different MP3 growth stages. For each MP3 stage the mean age was, MP3-F; 9.33 ±0.90, MP3-FG; 10.19 ±0.97, MP3-G; 11.08 ±0.86, MP3-H; 12.01 ±0.93, MP3-HI; 12.51 ±0.92 and MP3-I; 12.98 ±0.71. There was a significant positive correlation between MP3 growth and AS ossification stages with Spearman{u2019}s correlation coefficient was 0.908
