Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine - Department of Operative Dentistry Summary: This randomized clinical trial study was carried out to evaluate and compare the effect of xylitol containing chewing gum with/without bicarbonate versus paraffin pellet on salivary pH in high caries risk patients. A total number of 36 eligible participants were randomly divided into three groups (n=12) according to the tested chewing gum (A), where (A1) represents participants exposed to xylitol chewing gum, (A2) represents participants exposed to bicarbonate and xylitol chewing gum and (A3) represents control group where participants were exposed to paraffin pellet chewing. The pH of saliva was evaluated according to time in relation to the gum chewing (T) where (T0) represent the pH before chewing, (T1) represent 5 minutes after gum chewing. The pH of collected saliva was measured immediately after collecting the sample using pH meter Adwa (AD-11). The data were statistically analyzed and numerical data were described as mean and standard deviation. The results with respect to mean salivary pH showed statistically significant increase from baseline to immediately after spitting. Intergroup comparison for salivary pH indicated no statistically significant difference in saliva samples (p=0.298). The highest percentage of changes were found in xylitol and sodium bicarbonate group followed by xylitol group and the lowest mean value was found after paraffin chewing group
