Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Institute of African Research and Studies - Department of Natural Resources Summary: Pesticides are used globally for the protection of food, fiber, human health and comfort. However, their excessive use/misuse especially in the developing countries, their volatility, long-distance transports eventually results in widespread environmental contamination. In addition many older, non-patented, more toxic, environmentally persistent and inexpensive chemicals are used extensively in developing nations, creating serious acute health problems and local and global environmental impacts. Therefore, this study was carried out to (1) estimate the pesticide residues levels of organochlorine, organophosphate, and synthetic-pyrethroid in cucumber, sweet pepper, strawberry and potatoes collected from popular markets in Cairo, Giza and Qalubia Governorates. (2) Estimate the pesticide residues levels of organochlorine, organophosphate, and synthetic-pyrethroid in organic samples of cucumber, sweet pepper, strawberry and potatoes. Study the effect of food processing on the stability of organochlorine, organophosphate, carbamates and synthetic-pyrethroid pesticides. (3) Determine residues of lufenuron on strawberry, chlorothalonil on sweet pepper and hexythiazox on cucumber. The extraction and cleaning operations were carried out using new technical methods (Quechers)
