Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Pharmacy - Department of Microbiology and Immunology Summary: Aim of study: The aim of this study was to investigate the in vitro effectiveness of garlic extract in combination with chosen antimicrobial agents against certain pathogens causing otitis media. Methods: Specimens were obtained, cultivated and purified on different agar media. Antimicrobial susceptibility was done using the disc diffusion method using nine antibiotics with different modes of actions. Minimum inhibitory concentration of garlic, ciprofloxacin, tobramycin and nystatin was determined by agar well diffusion method. Combination between garlic and chosen antimicrobial agents was done. Biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles was done using aqueous garlic extract and sunlight. Results: Bacterial isolates were 59% while fungal isolates were 41%. Most resistant isolates were determined and identified. Combination between garlic extract and antimicrobial agents showed synergistic effect. Finally, biosynthesized silver nanoparticles showed good antimicrobial activity against tested pathogens. Conclusion: aqueous garlic extract could be used in vitro in combination with some antimicrobial agents. Biosynthesized silver nanoparticles have a great potential in vitro as antimicrobial compound against tested pathogenic microorganisms
