Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Anaesthesia Summary: Spinal anesthesia is the most trustworthy block for lower abdominal and orthopedic surgery. Bupivacaine is suitable for procedures lasting from 90-120 minutes (2). More studies are needed to evaluate the optimal dose of dexamethasone to be used in spinal anesthesia (8). Intrathecal opioid administration has central and respiratory depression effects.The most common side-effects are nausea, vomiting, pruritus, and respiratory depression (5).The addition of intrathecal dexamethasone to bupivacaine has significantly improved the duration of sensory block in spinal anesthesia without any changes in onset time or complications in orthopedic surgery (4, 5 and 8).
