Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Science - Department of Geology
The present thesis aims mainly to evaluate the hydrocarbon potentiality of Bahariya Formation - Abu Roash "G" Member (Late Albian - Cenomanian) Succession in Alam El-Shawish East oil Field as a part of Abu Sennan sub-basin belonging to Abu Gharadig tectonic basin, northern Western Desert. The study focused on the integration of the results of lithostratigraphic cyclicity, geoseismic maps and cross sections, facies analysis including facies mapping, depositional facies modeling, sedimentological sequence evolution and petrographic investigations to achieve the main target of the thesis. Careful log correlation enables differentiation of the study succession into ten sedimentary cycles and further subcycles. Lower Bahariya Member is represented by cycles 1, 2, 3 and 4 while cycle 5 composes Middle Bahariya Member and Upper Bahariya Member includes cycles 6 and 7. Abu Roash "G" Member consists of cycles 8 and 9 compose its lower unit and cycle 10 composes its upper unit. Twenty four facies types and twenty petrographic rock types were recognized within these sedimentary cycles; the stacking of which form fifteen depositional facies associations. Three sedimentary models were proposed; these are fluvial model that is restricted in the Lower Bahariya Member particularly its lower part, estuarine model including tidal and wave dominated estuary and marine shoreline - shallow shelf model including shorefaces, transition storm shelf and offshore shallow marine shelf
