Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Pediatrics Summary: Introduction: Child overweight and obesity prevalence has risen substantially in the past three decades in most high-income countries and seems to be rising rapidly in low-income and middle-income countries. Childhood and, especially, adolescent obesity is predictive of adult obesity, which is associated with an increased incidence of diabetes, hypertension, gallstones, and hypercholesterolemia. Epidemiological data suggest that obesity was associated with increased risk of renal injury in children Objective: Assess urinary podocalyxin in obese children and adolescents as a marker of obesity related kidney disease compared to urinary albumin/creatinine ratio, a standard marker for glomerular injury. Patients and methods: A case-control study included 64 obese patients and 34 healthy controls. Cases were recruited from the obesity clinic of The Diabetes, Endocrine and Metabolism Pediatric Unit (DEMPU), Children Hospital, Cairo University. Non obese healthy children were recruited from outpatient clinic as a control group were enrolled to detailed history and physical examination, laboratory investigation. An informed written consent was obtained from parents before enrollment
