Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Clinical and Chemical Pathology
HAIs pose major problems especially in neonatal and pediatric ICUs as they are common causes of morbidity and mortality among hospitalized infants and children. HAIs may be attributed to host, microbial and environmental factors. Invasive devices and surgical procedures are responsible for most of the nosocomial infections especially in high risk patients as pediatric ICUs. The most commonly encountered infections related to invasive devices included VAP, CLABSI and CAUTI. The study was designed as a prospective laboratory based surveillance that included 100 microorganisms isolated from different clinical specimens from pediatric ICU patients from 80 patients admitted to Cairo University Pediatric Hospital ICUs over a period of 2 months from 1/9/2017 to 30/10/2017. Demographic, clinical data and patient outcome were recorded for all patients. Cultures of urine, blood and BAL and wound swabs were processed for bacteriological identification of causative organisms of CAUTI, CLABSI, VAP and SSI respectively and diagnosis was made according to CDC/NHSN case definitions
