Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Pediatrics
Background: Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN) results from the failure of relaxation of the pulmonary vasculature at birth, leading to shunting of non-oxygenated blood from the pulmonary to the systemic circulation (Gao & Raj, 2009). Regardless of the etiology, PPHN should be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible to avoid hypoxia related short term and long-term morbidities (Konduri & Kim, 2009). Aim of the work:To assess serum level of B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) in neonates with persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) to be used as a marker for diagnosis. Its role as a prognostic indicator related to the outcome of PPHN will be assessed. Patient & methods: prospective cohort case control study was conducted in the period from April 2015 to September 2016 on 30 full term newborn babies diagnosed with PPHN by clinical echocardiographic criteria & 15 age and sex matched healthy newborn babies as Control group. Patients were subjected to: Clinical examination, echocardiography, serum level of brain- type natriuretic peptide and follow up
