Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Tropical Medicine Summary: Background & Aim:Urinary Ý2 microglobulin (Ý2M) is a marker for renal tubular dysfunction. The current study aimed at assessing its sensitivity for tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) related nephrotoxicity among HBV patients. Methods:Forty-two HBV patients werecandidate forTDF or have recently started it (for less than 6 months) were enrolled and subjected to demographic, clinical, laboratory assessment, abdominal ultrasound and transient elastography. GFR was estimated using Cockcroft-Gault equation. In addition, urinaryÝ2Mwas measured by ELISA method within 6 months after the introduction of TDF treatment and again 6 months later. Results: The mean age of 42studied patients was 41.8(9.55) years, 27 were males and 59.5% patients have elevated urinary Ý2 Mafter 6 months follow up. Urinary Ý2M was 0.07(0.07)æg/ml at baseline and insignificantly increased up to 0.09(0.08)æg/ml after 6 months follow up.Despitechangesin serum creatinine levels from 0.85(0.23)mg/dl at baseline to 0.90(0.21)mg/dlafter 6 months andin eGFR over the same period being 126.16(39.8)ml/minat baseline and 117.64(42.23)ml/minat 6 months follow up, there was no definite renal impairment (by elevation of urinary Ý2 M and/or serum creatinine above or decrement of GFR below their normal cut offs). There was insignificant correlation found between urinary Ý2M and other studied parameters
