Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery Summary: Background: Stroke is a devastating complication of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). During this study, the postoperative neurological complications have been assessed after on pump CABG versus off pump CABG. Methodology: This prospective retrospective comparative study includes 200 patients who had CABG divided equally into two groups: Group A (on pump) CABG and group B (off pump CABG). Preoperative, operative and postoperative data are collected and analyzed to compare between the neurological outcomes of the two used techniques of CABG. Results: Incidence of early postoperative neurological complications after on pump CABG is higher that after off pump CABG but without statistical significant difference. However, total operative time, incidence of AF and ICU stay are significantly more after on pump CABG than off pump CABG. Meanwhile, EF is increased significantly after off pump CABG and decreased after on pump CABG. Conclusion: Postoperative neurological insults especially stroke are more after on pump CABG than off pump CABG but that failed to reach statistical significant difference
