Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Science - Department of Analytical Chemistry Summary: Construction of selective copper electrodes (MSPE, MCPE) based on metformin and metformin-copper (II) complex as modi{uFB01}er have been optimized. The chemical reaction on the surface of the sensors was noticed in filling spaces between graphite particles after the interaction between metformin modifier and Cu(II) ion as shown in SEM image and %Cu in EDX. These data were supported by IR spectra which also confirm the formation of complex between Cu (II) ion and metformin through coordination with amino group. Also, computational calculations (DFT/B3LYP) was used to calculate the energy of the optimized structures for metformin (-432.84 Hartrees) and metformin-copper complex (-1093.79 Hartrees) which formed on the electrode surface. The performance characteristics of the electrodes have been optimized. Also, physicochemical characteristics of copper-metformin complex have been investigated. The new sensors not only successfully applied for potentiometric determination of Cu(II) in real water samples and biological fluid of Wilson disease patients with high agreement with data obtained from spectrophotometric and ICP methods but also show antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus as Gram-positive bacteria and Escherichia coli as Gram- negative bacteria
