Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Pharmacy - Department of Pharmacognosy Summary: As it's obviously known, products from natural sources, generally and herbs especially, have been used for treatment of various ailments for many centuries. They were used in ancient ages depending on traditional beliefs as the case in some countries of Africa and Asia where almost 80% of people there trust in and depend on folk medicine for curing their diseases. Recently, scientists all over the world, who are interested in herbal medicines, have shown great attention to perform very restricted scientific researches to ensure their actual biological activities as well as their safety. Natural products are still the favored products for some drug designers' more than synthetic compounds especially in the treatment of cancer, inflammation and microbial disease. Unfortunately, herbal remedies are still not broadly used as satisfactorily and complete curing agent for some diseases. There is a major problem in natural remedies intake which is their poor bioavailability. Being large in molecular sizes, poor solubility and hence stability in body fluids, lacking targeting to the side of action, make the use of active natural products of very little value. For all that drawbacks, efforts must be trailed to retain the tremendous benefits of naturally occurring remedies. One of the most successful strategies in the recent few years is the incorporation of nanotechnology and herbal medicine
