Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Science - Department of Botany Microbiology
Members of the genus Acinetobacter have become the focus of many researches due to their pathogenic potential. Interest in Acinetobacter spp. has been growing for the past 30 years. One of the main reasons for the present increased interest in this genus is the emergence of multi-resistant strains, some of which are pan-resistant to antibiotics that suddenly cause an outbreak of infection involving several patients in clinical units. The goal of our study is to analyze the levels of synergy between colistin and rifampin, against isolates with reduced susceptibility to both colistin and rifampin, and their relationship with the minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs).Over two years; from January 2015 to January 2017 a total of twenty-three clinical isolates of Acinetobacter baumannii showing reduced susceptibility to antibiotic colistin, were collected from multiple Microbiology Laboratories in Cairo university teaching hospitals (The Main old Hospital, Abu Elreech pediatric hospital, Elmanial Specialized Hospital and New Kasr Elainy teaching hospital). All clinical isolates were collected from various sample types.Twenty-three clinical isolates of A. baumannii were collected from different clinical samples types [pus (n=10), blood (n=4), urine (n=4), sputum (n=5)]. Six acinetobacter isolates susceptible to colistin used as control isolates were included in the study. All clinical samples were subjected to standard microbiological processing for identification and processed in the microbiology laboratory according to the standard procedure (CLSI)
