Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Neuropsychiatry
Background:Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe psychiatric disorder.Little data exists on the neurological manifestations of BPD. Therefore, studying the correlation of clinical or behavioral data with underlying structural and functional neurological findings in BPD has been recently the focus of interest Aim: To assess the prevalence of Neurological Soft Signs (NSS) in females with BPD and detect the relationship between theseNSS and BPD symptoms. Method: A case control study was conducted on sixtysubjects who were recruited from Al Kasr Al Ainy Hospital, Cairo University over a period of 8 months. 30adult female patientswith BPDwere compared to 30adult female controls. Patients were diagnosed by SCID II for DSM IV. SCID I and the GHQ-12 were administered to the patients or controls respectively to exclude comorbid Axis-I psychiatric diagnosis. All subjects were assessed by the Borderline Personality Questionnaire, the Barratt impulsivity scale-11,the Brief Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Assessment tool, the Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation, and the part of the Cambridge Neurological Inventory assessing NSS. Results:Relative to controlsubjects, the BPD group had significantly higher total NSS scores, primitive reflexes subscale score, and sensory integration subscale scores. There was a positive correlation betweenNSS and impulsivity, suicidality, self-harm, intense anger, emptiness, quasi-psychosis as well as overall severity of borderline symptoms (total BPQ score)
