Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Pathology Summary: Background: Lupus glomerulonephritis is a serious medical condition which is associated with poor survival and considerable morbidity.Pure membranous lupus GN has distinct histological features, it is characterized by subepithelial immune deposits along the peripheral capillary loops, leading to uniform glomerular capillary wall thickening. The silver stains remain essential to the renal pathologist as it reveals delicate detail of the GBM. Purpose: Histopathological study of renal biopsies ofLupusGN cases with classification according to the ISN/RPS 2003 classification, calculation of activity and chronicity indicesaccording toAustin et al.,1984,detection of early cases of class V which may be missed by routine stains andcorrelation with the available clinical data. Methods: Histochemical staining with silver stain was performed on 70 formalin fixed paraffin embedded native renal biopsy specimens of patients with Lupus GN, selected from the Nephropathology Unit, Kasr El Ainy Hospital in the period from January 2015 through November 2018.Cases with glomeruli number less than 10and associated with hepatitis C virus infection or diabetes mellitus were excluded.Cases suspicious for class V were first selected, then combined classes III/IV and V followed by class II and class V in nearly equal proportion
