Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Dermatology and Venerology Summary: Background: Lichen Planus (LP) is a chronic mucocutaneous inflammatory disease. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) was found to be closely related to different chronic inflammatory diseases as LP. Vaspin is a regulatorty anti-inflammatory adipokine which might provide a new insight in the pathogenesis of MetS and LP. Objective: Estimating Vaspin (tissue and serum levels) and C-reactive protein (CRP) in LP patients and controls. Assessment of MetS criteria in LP patients in comparison to controls. Patients and methods: Thirty patients with Lichen planus and thirty age and sex matched healthy controls were eligible for the study. Serum, tissue Vaspin and CRP were estimated by ELISA. Candidates were subjected to clinical and laboratory examinations to assess anthropometric data as well as various criteria of metabolic syndrome. Results: Tissue Vaspin showed higher levels in comparison to serum in patients with a significant negative correlation. Tissue Vaspin rather than serum showed significant higher levels in LP patients in comparison to controls. Both BMI (body mass index) and triglycerides showed significant positive correlations to tissue Vaspin among patients. Only tissue Vaspin recorded higher significant mean levels in obese and overweight groups. LP patients showed a significant higher incidence of MetS. Waist Circumference, CRP, TGs and very low density protein (VLDL) showed significant higher levels in patients. There was no significant difference in Vaspin levels (tissue and serum) among patients with or without dyslipidemia, MetS, and Daibetes mellitus
