Dissertation note: Thesis (M.A.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Arts - Department of English Summary: The aim of this study is to examine the use of mythology in selected Ancient Egyptian and English folktales. The folktales include two folktales from Ancient Egyptian literature: The Story of Sinuheand The Story of the Shipwrecked Sailor and two folktales from English literature: 2The Wanderer3and 2The Seafarer3. Focus will be laid on specific concepts that are highlighted in Eastern and Western folktales.The highlighted concepts are the god king, good versus evil, the tree, and fate. Carl Jung{u2019}s archetypal approach will be used to explore the role played by the collective unconscious of people of different cultures in creating their mythologies and the ramifications of those mythologies in the folktales of these cultures. A comparative approach to the Ancient Egyptian and English folktales will be implemented to compare cultures that are claimed to be totally different; namely, Eastern and Western cultures
