This thesis explores the concept of social entrepreneurship and the challenges facing its development as well as the Egyptian government{u2019}s role in supporting the field post the Arab Spring. The thesis consists of three chapters on top of the general framework and the recommendations/conclusion sections. The general framework highlighted the value, aim, and objectives of the research as well as a brief background on the field of social entrepreneurship. Chapter one reviewed all the relevant literature around the topic with a special focus on the definition, scope, the benefit it has to offer, the challenges facing the field, and the role of the government in supporting the field. Chapters two and three were formatted in a similar way to the literature review in order to allow for easy comparisons between theory and practice. These chapters were concerned with presenting and discussing the results of the empirical study with regards to the scope of the field, the challenges it is facing, and the role of the Egyptian government in supporting the field. Claims and criticisms by the social enterprises were presented followed by the government{u2019}s viewpoints and responses.
