Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Science - Department of Zoology Summary: The present study was designed to: - 1- evaluate the efficacy of anti-tubulin agents against different stages of Schistosoma mansoni as a tool for the treatment of this parasitic infection by in vitro and in vivo experimental studies. 2- histochemical and histopathological studies in different organs (liver, spleen and intestine) in control mice as well as in mice experimentally infected by Schistosoma mansoni cercariae and treated by anti-tubulin agents. Seventy two mice were divided into nine groups (8 mice/group). Group 1: healthy control group received normal diet (non-infected non-treated), Group 2: infected and received normal diet (infected non-treated), Groups 3, 4, 5, 6, 7and 8: Mice infected with S. mansoni and received paclitaxel (antitubulin), vinblastine (antitubulin), and combination of the two drugs at dose (50 æg/Kg administered orally) started at 2 and 4 weeks after infection, 3 days for each week for 2 weeks (not consecutive), and Group 9: Mice infected with S. mansoni and received praziquantel (PZQ) (anti-schistosomal agent), (500 mg/Kg administered orally) at 6 weeks after infection, 2 days for each week for 2 weeks (not consecutive). All mice were sacrificed after 8 weeks post infection. Braziquantel had the best effective results, but the best anti-tubulin drug for recovery was paclitaxel alone, however, combination of paclitaxel and vinblastine gave the least side effects. Also, the early treatment (after 2 weeks) gave better results than the late one (after 4 weeks)
