Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Computers and Artificial Intelligence - Department of Operations Research and Decision Support Summary: Performance assessment is a crucial component of the management process in any type of organization. Performance measurement is an essential tool for addressing questions of productivity measurement in terms of efficiency, effectiveness and accountability. The performance is seen as the overall status of an organization in relation to its competitors, or against its own or external standards, and should generally be gauged across a host of measures, namely economy, efficiency and effectiveness. The concept of efficiency refers to the measurement of relationship between inputs and outputs. For a decision-making unit (DMU) depending on a single input, measuring its efficiency is relatively straightforward, but when multiple inputs and multiple outputs are involved, the measurement of efficiency becomes difficult. The complex nature of the relationships between multiple inputs and multiple outputs involved in the efficiency analysis of DMUs requires sophisticated techniques to handle large number of variables and constraints. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is a mathematical programming approach that utilizes multiple inputs and multiple outputs to evaluate the relative efficiencies of DMUs either within a single organization or across multiple similar organizations
