Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Science - Department of Botany and Microbiology Summary: Trianthema portulacastrum L. is a terrestrial summer weed. It has wide ecological amplitude and competes with various agricultural crops. The individual plant produces large number (1931 seeds) of small seeds (1.08 mg seed-1 ). Scanning electron microscopy of the seed testa revealed that the anticlinal walls of the epidermal cells were penta-hexagonal, highly raised, while the periclinal walls were sunken. The effects of temperatures on seed germination were monitored under continuous light and continuous dark conditions. Under light conditions, the percentages of seed germination were significantly higher than at the dark conditions. The temperatures of 35, 40 and 45 {u00B0}C promoted the seed germination. The HPLC analysis of the shoot extract of T. portulacastrum confirmed the presence of 14 phenolic substances, which included 12 phenolic compounds and 2 flavonoids. Mulching with different amounts of the dry shoots of T. portulacastrum affected the growth parameters of the test weed species Corchorus olitorius, and Euphorbia heterophylla
