Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Orthopedic Surgery Summary: Humeral shaft fractures account for up to 3% of all orthopaedic injuries. While overall they are evenly distributed between males and females, they do have a bi-modal distribution with the majority of high-energy fractures occurring in young males ages 21{u2013}30, and low-energy fractures occurring in older women, ages 60{u2013}80 years . The mechanism of trauma in the patients was road traffic accidents in 19 patients (47.5%) and a fall in 19 patients (47.5%) and sports related injury in two patients (5%). 34 patinets had closed injury(85%) while 4 patients had grade I open fracture (10%) and two sustained grade II open injury(5%). The level of the fractures was in the middle third in 29 patients (72.5%) while it occurred at the junction of middle third to distal third in 11 patients (27.5%). 23 patients had wedge spiral fracture pattern (57.5%),10 patients (25%) had transverse fracture, 5 patients (12.5%) were oblique and 2 (5%) had segmental fracture. The mean operation time was 95.4 ± 25.6 min (range 70{u2013}110 min)in DCP group and 100.8 ± 20.1 min (range 85{u2013}120 min) in LCP group . According to the ASES score, the final results obtained were in group I excellent in twelve patients (60%), good in six patients (30%) and poor in two patient (5%).While in group II it was excellent in seven patients (35%), good in ten patients (50%) and poor in three patients (15%)
