Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of African Postgraduate Studies - Department of Natural Resources
In this study, we examined the long-term trend of climate parameter temperature in 14 stations in Egypt and Libya with a record of 35 years, to determine the number of heat waves in the study area. There is no consistent definition of the heat wave phenomenon; however, in the Thesis we refer to the definition of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), which states, "A heat wave occurs when the maximum daily temperature exceeds more than three consecutive days, the average maximum temperature of 5 {u00BA}, and that it is greater than 32{u00BA} ". In this work we will study the heat waves in Egypt and Libya during the specific period 1983:2017; determine the number of these waves and their frequency; the reasons for its occurrence; analyze of these data statistically to study the temporal and spatial distribution of heat waves. Trends of mean annual and mean monthly temperature were positive at all study stations from 1983-2017. During the last 50 years of the 20th century, the average annual temperature indicates to a slight rise in temperature, but this warming was not uniform at all stations in Egypt and Libya with some recommendations to avoid the harmful effects of heat waves
