Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Pediatrics Summary: Introduction: In asthma, the airway inflammatory phenotype influences clinical characteristics and treatment response. So far induced sputum is the gold standard test for phenotyping inflammatory asthma. Objective: To correlate blood count parameters related to asthma inflammatory phenotype to sputum cytology parameters. Patients and methods: This was cross-sectional study including 50 asthmatic children age range 6-18 years old. All included children were subjected to detailed history taking, physical examination and investigations including, complete blood count with differential leucocytic count, sputum analysis for total cell count and pulmonary function test. Results: There was statistically significant difference between different types of asthma as regards ELR, ENR, and EMR being higher in esinophilic and mixed granulocytic asthma with P value <.001) , as well as regards NLR being higher in mixed granulocytic asthma and neutrophilic asthma with P value <.001. The present study revealed statistically significant positive correlation between blood eosinophils and sputum eosinophils with P value <.001. The present study stated that the cutoff point for a significant blood eosinophil percentage was 6.5% (p value <.001) with a sensitivity and specificity of (91.3%, 92.6%), for blood ELR cut-off point 0.1350 with sensitivity and specificity (91.3%, 96.3%), for blood ENR cut-off point 0.155 with sensitivity and specificity (82.6, 85.2%) and for EMR cut-off point 0.855with sensitivity and specificity (82.6%,85.2%). The present study ROC curve for neutrophilic asthma show the cutoff point for a significant blood neutrophils was 52.5% (p value <.001) with a sensitivity and specificity of (82.4, 84.8)
