Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Nursing - Department of Pediatric Nursing Summary: Pain assessment in high risk neonates is highly challenging. The aim of the study is to assess nurses' perception about pain assessment and management in neonatal intensive care units. Descriptive design was utilized; a convenient sample of 60 nurses. Nurses{u2019} perception about pain assessment and management in NICUs was developed. There was statistically significant relation between gender, age, years of experience, nurses{u2019} qualification and their perception level. The study concluded that most of the NICUs{u2019} nurses had high perception level about pain assessment and management. Also the study findings explored major barriers to effective pain assessment and management that faces nurses in NICUs including increase work load, shortage of nursing staff and lack of medication supplies. The study recommended that implement on job training program to newly nurses about neonatal pain assessment and management in all NICUs during orientation period, Neonatal pain assessment tools should be available in all NICUs
