Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Pharmacy - Department of Pharmacognosy Summary: Herbal medicine is a wide origin of active metabolites and can be used as a safe and effective preventive and curative tool for various diseases. Consequently, it is important to be well-analyzed applying the recent techniques for improving the quality control assessment of the phytopharmaceutical products. The aim of this work is to: 1. Study the quality control (Q.C) criteria of one of the most important herbs that has been used for decades as an alternative tool to toothbrush Salvadora persica L. root. 2. Q.C criteria of phytopharmaceutical products used for treatment of some oral health problems and three new suggested preparations for prevention and treatment of dental caries and periodontal diseases. 3. Comparison of different methods of analysis (HPTLC, UV, GC, and HPLC) used for determination of active constituents of phytopharmaceutical products which present in the Egyptian market; as well as, for the new preparations was performed. 4. Validation of HPLC and GC methods was carried out. 5. The antimicrobial activities of different extracts of Miswak and the new preparations were tested using disk diffusion and broth microdilution methods. 6. The antiviral effects of different extracts of Miswak were established applying MTT assay
