Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Science - Department of Zoology
Donkeys and horses are present all over the world, they have served a variety of practical purposes, which suffer from wide range of infectious diseases as helminthiasis. Parascaris equorum is a parasitic roundworm that infect the small intestine of the young equines, parascariasis causes cough, weight loss and nervous disturbances. In case of heavy infestations, it will lead to death following rupture of the small intestine. In the present study, different concentrations of biocompatible zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) were used to see their in vitro effect on Parascaris equorum, infecting Equidae in Egypt. The ZnO NPs were synthesized by using egg albumin to be a bio template and subsequently characterized by XRD, TEM and DLS, which confirmed that the crystalline sample of ZnO NPs is hexagonal in structure. The average crystallite size was found to be {u0334} 18 nm. Treatment of Parascaris equorum with ZnO NPs (100, 200, 300, 400 mg/L) significantly increase the activities of AST, ALT, ALP enzymes as compared to control group. In addition, the total protein, albumin, cholesterol and triglycerides levels increased significantly in male worms exposed to the concentrations 300 and 400 mg/l ZnO NPs compared to control worms, while the level of these parameters were recorded with no significant change in treated female worms. However, the administration of ZnO NPs (100, 200, 300, 400 mg/L) significantly increased MDA level but decreased the levels of GST, GSH and CAT in comparison to control group. While, a significant increase was observed in the level of NO in treated male and female worms. SEM examination revealed that the untreated worms expressed the typical cephalic and posterior ends while in case of incubating worms with 400mg/l ZnO NPs showed that they had a serious damage in the cephalic region, cuticle and posterior end as compared to untreated controls
