Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Ophthalmology
Glaucoma is one of the most serious diseases affecting the human eye. It is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. It causes silent blindness as the initial loss of vision is of peripheral vision; therefore the visual acuity is maintained until late in the disease. For this reason, many initiatives have emerged from different organizations to promote the elimination of glaucoma before 2020. Diagnostic techniques are needed to evaluate glaucomatous damage at an earlier stage of the disease and to monitor patients with suspected glaucoma even before visual field affection. Optical coherence tomography (OCT)is one of the important techniques to study the anatomical part of optic nerve affection. It provides accurate quantitative analysis and reproducible measurements of the optic nerve and RNFL parameters including disc, cup, rim, and vertical C/D areas, and superior and inferior RNFL thickness. In diseases not accompanied by visual field changes or anatomical optic nerve changes as ocular hypertension (OHT), OCT changes will not be detected early enough to allow decision us making. Thus, the pattern electroretinogram (PERG) was suggested for evaluation of these cases because it works by recording the electrical response of the RGC network Therefore, this study aimed to detect the pathological changes in PERG in glaucoma and OHT cases in addition to the evaluation of the correlation between OCT and PERG findings. The study found no correlation between OCT and PERG findings in POAG and OHT cases
