Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Pediatrics Summary: Purpose: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess lung ultrasonography as an alternative diagnostic tool to bedside Chest X-ray for the diagnosis of different neonatal chest diseases. Patients & methods: The study was performed on 60 neonates with congenital heart diseases admitted during the period from February 2019 to October 2019 in the NICU and Neonatal Cardiac Intensive Care Unit of Cairo University Pediatric Hospital presenting with clinical picture of respiratory distress. Chest X-rays and lung US were done. Results: We found that LUS has higher accuracy at diagnosis of pleural effusion. In pneumothorax group, equivocal results by both Chest X-ray and lung ultrasound, so it can be used as an alternative to Chest X-ray. While in RDS, there was mild discrepancy, Chest X-ray could detect one case that couldn{u2019}t be detected by LUS. Also, in pneumonia, there was mild discrepancy, LUS couldn{u2019}t detect 2 cases but they were detected by Chest X-ray. As it is mild discrepancy, we can use lung ultrasound as a diagnosti tool at this group. Conclusion: Lung ultrasound is a simple and reliable tool that can be used by the clinician in different neonatal chest diseases. It is as reliable as CXR, can be easily repeated at the patient's bedside and carries no risk of ionizing radiation, in contrast to radiography and CT imaging
