Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Anaesthesia Summary: Pain is accompanied with altered glycemic state, lipolysis and protein catabolism which could impair wound healing and increase the risk of infection (3) . It is also associated with increased catecholamine release, vasoconstriction, impaired tissue perfusion and decreased partial pressure of oxygen in tissues.. Pain also leads to immune system disorders (4-6). Inadequate management of acute pain may result in chronic pain, which is often neuropathic in nature (2). It also can result in long-term and hazardous physiological and psychological consequences. The majority of patients describe the pain experienced during ICU treatment as a source of sleep-related disorders after discharge (7). Most of patients recall moderate to severe pain for a duration of up to 6 months after discharge
