Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Neuropsychiatry Summary: Background: Individuals with First Episode Psychosis (FEP) show increased risk of suicide compared to those with chronic Schizophrenia which necessitates early intervention and management. Aim: To assess suicidal ideation and behavior, the quantitative and qualitative difference of suicidal ideation and behavior, the qualitative and quantitative difference of depressive symptoms and the association between suicidal ideation and behavior and severity of psychotic symptoms among patients diagnosed with FEP and those diagnosed with chronic Schizophrenia. Method: 32 patients with FEP, 32 patients with chronic schizophrenia and 32 matched controls were assessed by Beck Depression Inventory Scale (BDI-II) and Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation (BSSI). The patients' groups were assessed by the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale for Schizophrenia (PANSS). Results: There was a significant statistical difference between FEP, Schizophrenia and healthy controls group in the mean scores of Beck depression inventory and Beck scale for suicidal ideation. For Correlation, there was a significant positive correlation between DUP, PANSS-P, PANSS-N and PANSS-T and between BSSI scores in FEP. As regards suicidal ideation in FEP, depression was the sole clinical symptom domain associated with increased suicidal severity
