Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine - Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Summary: Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare local control in excision of buccinator muscle with the skin versus excision the buccinator muscle without the skin in patients with squamous cell carcinoma. Methodology: A total of 40 patients with buccal squamous cell carcinoma presented to the surgery department for the surgical resection according to the standard protocol. Of these 40 patients, (20 underwent excision the buccinator mucle with skin and 20 underwent excision the buccinator mucle without skin).all patients were assessed for local control after one month to one year later.the maximum mouth opening were assessed preoperatively and one month postoperatively. Results: The local control was (100%) in the study group and (95%) in the control group, but There were no statistically significant differences between the two interventions (P value 1). The maximum mouth opening decreased after the surgery in both groups and the study group showed more loss than the control group. There were no statistically significance differences. Conclusions: Buccal squamous cell carcinoma is an aggressive disease, Skin excision with buccinator muscle slightly increase the local control. Furthers studies are needed to validate this topic with larger sample size
