Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Internal Medicine Summary: Objectives: Trefoil factor 3 (TFF-3) is a small peptide that plays an important role in mucosal protection, cell proliferation, and cell migration. The aberrant expression of TFF-3 is correlated with gastrointestinal inflammation, solid tumors, and other clinical diseases. The objective of this study was to identify possible correlation of serum TFF-3 in LN. Materials and Methods: In the study 87 subjects were enrolled, including 45 SLE patients and 42 control (apparent healthy individual) were selected from Internal Medicine outpatient clinics and Inpatient section of Internal Medicine Department in Kasr Al-Ainy Hospital at Cairo University. All groups were subjected to clinical evaluation including detailed history taking including drug history and thorough general examination aiming to detection of SLE affected organs for estimation of SLEDAI score. In addition, laboratory and radiological work up was done including Pelviabdominal ultrasonography, kidney function tests, urinary albumin/ creatinine ratio, urine analysis, Glycated hemoglobin and TFF-3 plasma level Results: There was statistically significant difference between cases and controls, in serum urea, Creatinine, eGFR, CRP, UACR, C3, C4 and TFF- 3, with P value of (<0.001) for each of them. Correlation between serum TFF-3 and cases variables revealed a statistically significant positive correlation between duration of SLE and plasma TFF-3 level in cases, (P value 0.012 & r = 0.370) i.e the longer the history of SLE the higher the level of plasma TFF-3 level. There was also a statistically significant positive correlation between serum C4 and serum TFF-3 level, (P value 0.024 & r = 0.335)
