Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Pharmacy - Department of Microbiology and Immunology Summary: This study illustrated the microbial production of glutathione (GSH) in aerobic optimized condition. Twenty-five microbial strains were screened for GSH production and L. casei was the best producing one (35.15 æM/g DCW). Its identification confirmed by 16S rRNA.The bacterial cells were grown in optimized condition medium using Placket- Burman factorial design.Temperature of 45 oC, 0.05% urea and 0.1% cysteine were the significant factors in the fermentation process promoting the production of (101.95 æmol/g DCW) GSH. After exposure to 1 Gy of gamma radiation, GSH production increased to (162.44 omole/g DCW).The produced GSH was used with gamma radiation to synthesize selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs). Its cytotoxic activity was tested against MCF-7 cells, and HepG-2 cells. SeNPs showed antimicrobial potential against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria with significant activity especially Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 (MIC: 5.20æg/ml)
