Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine - Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Summary: Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare quality of life outcomes of submental island flap versus maxillary obturator reconstruction after partial maxillectomy. Methodology: This work was conducted between October 2017 and December 2019. Cases were selected from outpatient clinic in National Cancer Institute - Cairo University-Egypt. A total of 16 patients with maxillary tumors or defects presented to the surgery department for the surgical resection and/or reconstruction according to the standard protocol. Of these 16 patients, (8 underwent reconstruction with surgical obturator and 8 underwent submental island flap reconstruction). Results: University of Washington quality of life questionnaire[53] used to measure the quality of life. There were statistically significant differences between the two interventions in most of the questionnaire domains (P{u02C2}0.05). For the pain, chewing, swallowing, speech, taste, mood and anxiety there were statistically significant differences (P{u02C2}0.05) reflecting more improvement in submental group compared to obturator group, however, the obturator group showed more improvement regarding the appearance. Conclusions: This study evaluated and compared QOL outcomes between submental flap and obturator reconstruction of palatal defect. The results revealed statistical differences between the two groups of patients. In this study we founded that submental flap reconstruction provided better function and quality of life than obturator. This associated with less pain, better voice quality pronouncing words, chewing, swallowing food and psychosocial adjustment
