Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Pediatrics
Background and aim: Bronchial Asthma is a heterogeneous disease, usually characterized by chronic airway inflammation.Asthma is rated as the most common chronic disease affecting children. Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) are considered as cornerstone medications in asthma management to all asthmatic children in the different asthma degrees which reduce asthma morbidity and mortality. Aim of our study was to determine the effect of ICS use for at least 6 months on the glycemic status in asthmatic children. Subjects and methods: Our study was done at Allergy and Pulmonology outpatient clinic at Specialized Children{u2019}s Hospital, Cairo University and included two groups; 100 asthmatic children using ICS for at least 6months as a case group compared to 100 non-asthmatic healthy age and sex matched children as a control group. Full history taking, clinical examination and serum level of HbA1c and RBG was done. Results: In our study there was no statistically significant difference in the glycemic status between the asthmatic children on ICS for at least 6 months compared to the control group. Positive significant correlation was found between inhaledFluticasone{u2019}s mean daily dose and mean cumulative dose last 6 months with HbA1c (P= 0.003, 0.004 respectively). However, non-significant correlation was found between HbA1c&RBG withinhaled Beclomethasone{u2019}sdaily dose (p=0.95-0.64 respectively), cumulative dose in the last 6 months (P=0.95-0.64 respectively) and duration (p=0.11-0.09 respectively). No significant correlation was found between HbA1c, RBG with BMI of our patients (p=0.73-0.53 respectively), as well as asthma severity (p=0.37-0.37 respectively). Conclusion: the study concludes no statistically significant difference in the glycemic status between the asthmatic children on ICS for at least 6 months compared to the control group
