Background: Sleep disturbances and quality has been suggested to play an important role in the development of metabolic syndrome (MetS). However the results have been inconsistent.Aim of the study: To study association between quality of sleep, sleep disturbances and metabolic syndrome and its components in adults with metabolic syndrome.Methods: This study was case control that was conducted in the Family Medicine Outpatient Clinic in Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University.The study was included sixty two metabolic syndrome patients and sixty two age and sex matched control persons who were subjected to clinical, anthropometric measures,interview sleep questionnaires and systemic work up included : fasting blood sugar and lipid profile.Results: comparing the cases group to the control one, poor sleeper and OSA at risk were 96.8% and 62.9% versus 50% and 27.4% respectively. Among cases 29% had restless leg syndrome and 12.9% had day time sleepiness versus 0% among controls. Among the cases group, only poor sleep quality had significant association with systolic and diastolic blood pressure and females were at higher risk for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) while males were at high risk for restless leg syndrome (RLS) with no significance between sleep quality and other sleep disturbances.Conclusion: Poor sleep quality as well as other sleep disturbances (OSA, RLS, day time sleepiness) are more prevalent in patients with MetS
