Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Science - Department of Inorganic Chemistry Summary: In this study, a new organic linker Schiff base (H2L) derived from 4-aminobenzoic acid and 2-carboxybenzaldehyde has been successfully synthesized and characterized. The synthesized organic linker Schiff base (H2L) was designed to be used in preparation of a new cadmium based metal-organic framework (Cd-MOF) and copper based metal-organic framework (Cu-MOF) by sonochemical synthesis, They have also been characterized by using Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, BET surface area, scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and thermal analysis. The newly synthesized Cd-MOF and Cu-MOF were incorporated as ionophores in a carbon paste electrode for Cu(II) and Cd(II) ions determination, respectively, in different real water samples and the data showed an agreement with those obtained by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). The proposed sensors were highly selective for Cu(II) and Cd(II) ions and this was confirmed by selectivity coefficients values which determined by separate solution method (SSM) and fixed interference method (FIM). The synthesized Cd-MOF and Cu-MOF had mesoporous structure and this supported the mechanism of Cu(II) and Cd(II) ions successful determination
