Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine - Department of Prosthodontics Summary: Aim: Complete dentures used to restore function, esthetics and phonetics for completely edentulous patients. They can be fabricated either by: conventional or CAD/CAM method. The current study aims to compare patient satisfaction and retention of upper complete denture fabricated using two different denture base techniques; the first fabricated using rapid prototyping method, while the second is following conventional method of complete denture construction. Methodology: Sixteen completely edentulous patients were recruited from the outpatient clinics of Prosthodontics Faculty of Dentistry, Cairo University. All included patients were seeking to have maxillary and mandibular complete dentures fabricated following a strict inclusion criteria. The patients were randomly allocated in one of two groups; control group for conventionally fabricated complete denture bases and intervention group for Rapid Prototyping (RP) of complete denture bases. Patient satisfaction was assessed by using a validated patient questionnaire. The retention was measured by retention force gauge device at baseline (immediately at the day of delivery of prosthesis) and then three months later. Patient satisfaction and denture retention were assessed at baseline (one month after delivery of prosthesis) and three months later after complete denture delivery. Results: There was a statistically significant difference in the mean score of the overall patient satisfaction one month after delivery and three months later between the conventional and the Rapid Prototyping (RP) group. The RP group has shown lower mean score than conventional group v indicating more patient satisfaction with the RP group. There was also no statistically significant difference in denture retention score between the RP than the conventional group. The retention scores were evaluated immediately after delivery and three months after delivery
