Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Pharmacy - Department of Pharmacognosy Summary: Syzygium cumini (L.) skeels is a large, tropical, fruiting and evergreen tree cultivated in Egypt which belongs to family Myrtaceae (myrtle family). S. cumini is one of the important plants that have widely been used in traditional medicine. In our work, the botanical features of S. cumini of different organs can be considered useful data for correct authentication and identification of this species. The genetic profiling of the six oligonucleotide primers for two procedures (ISSR and SCoT) induced successive amplifications with a wide range of molecular sizes. The analysis of the amplified fragments resulted from two procedures can be used for identification of S. cumini. The preliminary phytochemical screening revealed that all different parts ( leaf, flower, stem, fruit, seed) of S. cumini containing volatile oils, flavonoids and tannins. Carbohydrates, alkaloids, sterols and triterpenes were detected in all parts of the plant. To the best of our knowledge our study it is first time to isolate and identify the volatile oil in S. cumini flower. The hydrodistilled volatile oil of flowers and fruits of S. cumini are a complex mixture composed mainly of monoterpene hydrocarbones, sesquiterpenes hydrocarbones and oxygen containing monoterpenes. The edible fruit and seed are considered a good source of protein, minerals and carbohydrates. The edible fruit is found to be a good healthy choice food because it is rich in vitamin C
