Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Rheumatology and Rehabilitation Summary: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is an inflammatory rheumatic disease that mainly affects the axial skeleton. Vitamin D appears to have significant effects on both innate and acquired immunity. Vitamin D deficiency is thought to be associated with both susceptibility to and activity of AS. Methods: The aim was to evaluate serum vitamin D levels in AS patients in comparison to age- and sex-matched apparently healthy individuals.The relationships between vitamin D levels;and AS activity, and manifestations as well as patients{u2019} mobility and functionality, as assessed by the Bath ankylosing spondylitis disease activity index (BASDAI), Bath ankylosing spondylitis metrology index (BASMI) and Bath ankylosing spondylitis functional index (BASFI), were studies Results: Thirty-three adult male patients were enrolled. Thirty-three apparently healthy individuals were included as controls. Patient{u2019}s vitamin D mean value was 7.18± 5.22 ng/mL while controls{u2019}mean value was 21.32± 10.08 ng/mL. The comparison between patients and controls revealed a statistically significant difference (p<0.001). A significant relation was detected between vitamin D level and BASFI (P=0.045). There was significant relationship between vitamin D levels and neither other Bath indices nor disease manifestations
