Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of General Surgery Summary: Introduction: obesity is, nowadays, a major health problem. bariatric surgery became one of the commonest methods to fight obesity. sasi is a novel bariatric procedure, that still under investigation. on the other hand oagb is one of the frequently performed bariatric surgery procedures worldwide nowadays. aim: the purpose of this study is to compare between two different surgical laparoscopic bariatric operations; laparoscopic single anastomosis sleeve ileum bypass (sasi) and one anastomosis gastric bypass (oagb) on nutritional deficiencies and weight loss. methods: forty-four patients were non-randomly allocated in two groups as 20 patients who were planned to have sasi and 24 patients who were planned to have oagb as primary operations for treatment of morbid obesity after their counseling about both procedures. data were collected over 12 months and analyzed. results: the majority of the patients were females (75%). the mean age was 42 and 39 years for sasi group and oagb group respectively, while the mean bmi was 51.2 and 49.5 kg/m2for sasi group and oagb group respectively. mean operative time was lower in oagb than sasi (76.3 vs 109.5 minutes). also, mean hospital stay was lower in oagb (1.133 vs 1.45 days for sasi). mean %ewl is higher in sasi (85.5% vs 82.3% after 12 months). mean hemoglobin is higher in sasi (12.9 gm/dl vs 12.3 gm/dl after 12 months). mean serum albumin is higher in sasi (4.1 gm/dl vs 3.9 gm/dl after 12 months). mean vitamin d3 and vitamin b12 levels are higher in sasi with insignificant difference. remission of dm is better in oagb (89% vs 83%). remission of htn is better in oagb also (100% vs 83%)
