Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Physical Therapy - Department of Musculoskeletal Disorders Summary: Background: Ankle sprains occur in athletes that stress the joint alignment and cause stress between the articular surfaces during weight bearing. The purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore if adding Biodex Balance System balance training to a recommended physical therapy exercise program may help patients with recurrent lateral ankle sprains improve their Spatial and Temporal Gait Parameters, balance, and sensory interaction abnormalities. Methodology: Fifty voluntary patients from both gender, diagnosed with a chronic recurrent lateral ankle sprain, ages ranged from 18 to 40 years old. Patients were assigned into two equal groups twenty-five patients: study group (A): was received Biodex Balance System training adding to Therapeutic exercise, and control group (B): The same recommended physical therapy exercise program like the group (A). Approximately 30 minutes per session for the Biodex Balance System, and from one to one and a half for the therapeutic exercise, three times per week for six weeks was done for all exercise modes. Three times per week for six weeks the recommended physical therapy exercise program was performed. Results: There were statistically significantly higher results in step length, stride length, stride velocity, gait velocity, single support time, and cadence; and a significant decrease in gait time (p < 0.01). There were statistically significantly higher results in overall, forward, backward, left, and right limits of stability; and a significant decrease in limits of stability time in the study group; and eye open and eye closed firm surface scores and eye open and eye closed foam surface scores (p < 0.01) in the study group (A) in favor of the control group (B)
