Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine - Department of Oral Biology Summary: Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the osteogenic potentiality of nano-bioactive glass (NanoBG) enhanced biocement based silicate with or without hyaluronic acid (HA) seeded in tibial bone defects of rabbits. Methodology: 24 male rabbits weighing 2.5 to 3.5 kilograms were randomly divided into three equal groups: 1- Group I (control group): rabbits received two tibial defects (1 defect per tibia), which was left untreated and served as control. 2- Group II (NanoBG group): the same as group I but the defects received NanoBG enhanced biocement based silicate cement. 3- Group III (NanoBG and HA group): as group II but the defects received NanoBG mixed with HA. Half of the animals were euthanized after 3 weeks while the other half after 6 weeks.The bone specimens were dissected. At each time interval, the bone specimens were processed and examined by scanning electron microscope in addition to the Energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy to assess the calcium and phosphorus weight percentage. Followed by histological and histomorphometrical examination. Results: The bone defects of group III showed significant improved osseous healing as compared to group I&II along the two durations.Upon long duration healing, the histological examination of the bone defects of Group III showed almost filled defects with mature compact bone, however both groups I &II revealed less mature bone with more bone marrow spaces in-between.The morphometric vii analysis performed between groups revealed a significant increase in the bone area percentage in group III in comparison to group I and II (P < 0.05)
