Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Neuropsychiatry Summary: Background and purpose: Chitinase -3-Like 1- Protein (CHI3L1) is a glycosidese secreted by monocytes, microglia, and activated astrocytes. Its distribution in inflammatory lesions suggests that it might be an important component of the astrocytic response to modulate CNS inflammation.CHI3L1 levels have been found to influence prognosis and disease severity. We aimed in this study to measure CSF level of Chitinase -3-Like 1- Protein and correlate its level with disability in Multiple Sclerosis.Methods: 52 MS patients (30 RRMS and 22 Progressive MS) with mean age 34.8 ± 8.9 SD were studied. 35 age, sex matched healthy controls were recruited.They all underwent full clinical assessment and CSF level of CHI3L1. Comparisons were made between patients and controls concerning CSF level of CHI3L1 and correlation between CSF level of CHI3L1 and multiple aspects of disability ( motor & cognition ) in MS patients. Results: Patients with MS had higher CSF level of CHI3L1 (p=<0.001) than control.Patients with progressive MS had higher levels than RRMS (p=<0.001). Also there were positive correlations between age of disease onset, disease duration, number of attacks and CSF levels of CHI3L1.There was significant positive correlation between total EDSS and CSF level of CHI3L1 (p=<0.001)
