Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine- Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics
The primary purpose of the prospective observational comparative study was to compare the progress of labour between average and obese women and to investigate the trends in maternal obesity and cesarean birth. Besides, the secondary objective was to evaluate the fetal birth weight and to analyse the neonatal outcome based on APGAR score in 1 minute and 5 minutes between the average and obese women. This study was performed at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department in Kasr Al Ainy University Hospital from December 2020 to May 2021. The study was conducted on 100 pregnant women at term during active first stage of labour. Parturients admitted to the hospital with the BMI {u2265}30 kg/m2 or 18.5-24.9 kg/m2 were selected for the study and grouped into two according to BMI classification. It was found that there was a significant statistical difference in the duration of labour be-tween obese and average weight women (6.66 ±1.39 versus 5.74 ±1.66 hours, p < 0.05). The mean cervical os dilatation in centimetres per hour between obese and non-obese women was also dif-ferent (0.55 ±0.40 versus 0.87 ±0.38 cm, p < 0.001). It was found that women with obesity had about three times higher risk of having a caesarean delivery compared to the non-obese controls (p < 0.001).The mean fetal birth weight significantly increased with increased maternal BMI
